Mark's Review:

I grabbed a pair of these shorts from the shop before a relaxed 60km ride with a cafe lunch half way. I'd been unhappy with another brand of "baggy" short I'd tried (admittedly a cheaper short also) which made a significant swish swish swish noise with every pedal stroke as the short leg rode up the thigh when the leg was bent at the top of the pedal stroke, and which had the inner short fixed in the outer short so the whole shebang needed washing after every ride.

As I pulled on the supplied inner short (under-short) I noticed the cut was fairly short, which makes them suitable for use under a variety of outer shorts. The fit is even and fairly tight, (necessary for the shorts and contents to stay in place) but with no squeeze points (a problem with my former pair of MTB shorts which had lead to me cutting the elastic at the bottom of the inner legs into pieces). The chamois is a high quality moulded affair, with lateral "flaps" which extend around the sides of the saddle.

I pulled on the outer short and they didn't feel like a baggy short at all, but had the feel of a well-cut pair of trousers, fitting closely, evenly and comfortably. These shorts have a zippered fly with a covering flap held in place with velcro, and have a double press-stud closure at the top, surrounded by velcro. Waist adjustment is via an elastic "belt" that runs through the back of the short, with velcro ends on each side of the short that can be adjusted forward or back easily (even possible while riding). They felt just fine, and Dana (my wife) commented that they looked good (unlike what I'd previously been wearing).

On the bike: while riding I'd advise wearing these like grandad wore his trousers - high! They'll do their job best this way, eliminating bunching over the saddle, and offering the best support to your body. I found the well thought out cut resulted in shorts that fit closely and move with the body, rather than the body moving inside the shorts. While not allowing quite the same degree of free movement as traditional lycra shorts, these caused very little restriction and behaved as any good short should, by sliding and rubbing on the seat rather than sliding and rubbing on the legs and bum. And no more swish swish as I pedalled! The inner shorts have a comforable chamois. For the best comfort it is important to wear the inner short stretched on the body - pull the waist up and the legs down. They'll probably want readjustment after much time off the bike and you don't want them bunching up around the crotch. Once adjusted, they do not have a tendency to bunch up while riding.

The presence of a functional fly makes nature stops easy.

Conclusion: I won't give up my bib'n'brace lycras just yet, but for an upcoming 2-week tour, I'll be wearing the Vaude Birdrides. I'll take a couple of spare pairs of inner shorts for hygiene, and will be comfortable and presentable on and off the bike.
