Towbar Mounted Bike Carriers

These are the most common, and generally the cheapest way to carry up to four bikes. The carriers use  the tow ball as a big nut and bolt to hold them on to the towbar. If you have a towball that cannot be removed from the towbar you'll need a carrier from our Towball Mounted Bike Carriers page. If your towbar is a removable square tube, you can also use carriers from our Receiver Hitch Mounted Bike Carriers page.

Preventing Damage to Your Bike

It's easy for bikes being carried together on the back of a car to scrape and rub together when rough roads are being driven over. Rather than letting the bikes dangle and swing about, it's better to strap them to the carrier, and to each other, with some sort of padding or protection where they touch.  Rags, tape, sponge etc can also be used.

Watch the exhaust! Don't attach bikes in such a way that a tyre ends up being close to the exhaust pipe. Or, if that can't be avoided, try to leave the wheel free so it can spin as you drive (they do that), so the exhaust doesn't always blow onto the same spot. We've replaced a tyre and tube a couple of times for surprised holidaymakers as a result of exhaust burning.
