Shimano and SRAM Road 10-Speed cassettes are interchangeable. Shimano 10sp MTB cassettes (Dyna-Sys) however, are not compatible with any other system (they have wider spacing between the sprockets than other 10-speed systems).

The spacer goes onto the wheel before the cassette. If your cassette doesn't tighten up properly when the cassette locknut is tightened (if you can still wiggle the sprockets slightly) then this spacer is needed.
